A key strand of extended schools is the provision of high-quality childcare, but this can be difficult in more sparsely populated areas. Jo Stephenson finds out how a cluster of schools in Norfolk has approached the problem head-on.

Objectives Childcare forms part of the core offer of extended schools, but ensuring access to high-quality provision can be a challenge for rural schools. This was true for a cluster of schools in Aylsham, Norfolk. "This is a very rural part of Norfolk and the few formal day nurseries that exist tend to be near bigger towns like Norwich and Great Yarmouth with only one or two outside that," says Vanessa Scargill, director of community strategy at Aylsham High School, who leads on the development of extended schools across the cluster. The solution was to work with local childminders to provide a flexible childcare service.
