How to Beat Burnout: Advice for Employers

Children's professionals across social care, health and education are increasingly leaving their jobs due to "burnout". Joe Lepper explores successful strategies to beat burnout and boost staff wellbeing.

The risk of "burnout" is a major issue facing children's professionals, according to a series of recent surveys.

Among social workers more than half - 55 per cent - told a Bath Spa University and the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) study last year that they intended to leave the profession within 18 months due to unmanageable caseloads, lack of support and other issues that meant they were struggling to cope.

Young teachers are also feeling the strain. A National Union of Teachers (now National Education Union) survey from April last year revealed that around half of those under the age of 35 are set to leave the profession within five years, citing workload and mental health concerns as reasons.
