Project Rapid Response Respiratory Physiotherapy
Purpose To prevent and reduce emergency admissions to hospital among severely disabled children with respiratory problems and improve quality of life
Funding £25,000 from the Department of Health 30 Million Stars programme for the six-month pilot and ongoing funding from NHS Nottinghamshire County and NHS Nottingham City
Background Being rushed to hospital is an all too common experience for children and young people with conditions such as severe cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and Batten disease. "Often they are very frail and prone to severe chest infections, which can be life threatening," says Dr Toni Wolff, community paediatrician at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust. "They are frequently admitted to hospital and can end up staying for two to three weeks."
Professionals in Nottinghamshire were keen to find ways to reduce such distressing emergency admissions and hospital stays for children with severe neurodisability. So they decided to test a community service designed to provide respiratory physiotherapy to children in their homes, inspired by a similar outreach project in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
