PROJECT
Creative Classrooms
PURPOSE
To improve primary school students’ and teachers’ emotional literacy through drama and storytelling
FUNDING
Creative Classrooms is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, which awarded the project £203,000 over three years from 2020 to July 2023. Currently, nine schools in an academy trust contribute financially to their sessions
BACKGROUND
Creative Classrooms was developed by charity Doncaster Community Arts, also known as Darts. Prior to 2020, Darts delivered a programme that encouraged teachers to use role-play in teaching such as acting like a Viking for a history lesson.
“We were using teaching-in-role to help literacy and curriculum aims,” says Darts director of arts and education Sarah Eastaff. “We started to see this style of work was also improving communication, personal and social development, and the ability to empathise with classmates.”
