Programme delivers a whole-school approach to mental health.

ACTION

HeadStart Newham is a school and community-based service dedicated to meeting the mental health needs of children and young people in the east London borough.

It was developed from a series of pilot projects to help improve resilience and wellbeing in 10- to 16-year-olds living in Newham. In 2016, the Newham Council was awarded £10m by the Big Lottery Fund - now the National Lottery Community Fund - through an initiative to improve mental health support in deprived areas.

It now provides mental health services in around three quarters of Newham's 50 primary and 13 secondary schools.

HeadStart resilience training lead, Louise Bauer says programmes such as this are an invaluable resource for schoolchildren.
