Purpose To transform a severely under-performing school

Background Pimlico Academy in London has undergone a transformation. In just two years the setting – formerly Pimlico School – went from being a school in special measures to one rated "outstanding" by Ofsted. The school relaunched as an academy in September 2008, sponsored by the charity Future. The secondary school, which includes a sixth form, currently has 1,225 11- to 18-year-olds on roll. The majority come from areas that are among the most socially deprived in the country. The proportion eligible for free school meals is twice the national average. A high proportion of students have English as an additional language and a third have moderate learning difficulties, dyslexia, behavioural or emotional needs or disabilities.
