Provider Islington Council
Name Junior Assistants
Summary The London Borough of Islington is helping young people from deprived areas take their first steps into work. The Junior Assistant initiative, set to launch next month, will aim to give 14- to 16-year-olds the opportunity to work for the council across a range of roles.
Youth unemployment affects 7.5 per cent of Islington's 18- to 24-year-olds. In response to this, the council has introduced its Junior Assistants programme, which aims to give opportunities to teenagers living on an estate that has particularly high rates of unemployment.
With employers keen to see young people coming to them equipped with the skills necessary to survive in the world of work, the council wanted to help the children receive relevant experience and break the cycle of worklessness on the estate.
