Name Harrow Carers “All-Girls Camp”
Provider Harrow Carers
Young carers in Harrow devised and organised an all-girls camp to help overcome the cultural barriers young women from diverse backgrounds experience.
In February 2020, Harrow Carers – a charity that supports young carers aged five to 17 and their families – was awarded a grant from John Lyon’s Charity to fund the salary of young carers manager Phill Hollis.
Hollis provides support for young carers, many of whom care for someone with a health condition or addiction. He explains that during a support session he was asked: Why don’t more Asian girls come to our groups? “It was a valid question,” he says, explaining that it prompted a discussion about the cultural differences and barriers young girls face, with a core focus on young Asian girls and the need to bridge the gap.
