Specialist children's homes provide an alternative to hospital and/or specialist rehab for those with mental health needs.

ACTION

Cove Care was set up in 2008 by mental health nurses Lee Smith and Beverly Cyrus with the aim of providing specialist residential placements for young people with mental health needs.

Both had a long background working in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and were keen to provide a safe alternative to hospital care as well as offering specialist rehabilitation to those coming out of inpatient units.

The service, which is designed to complement NHS services, not only offers much-needed extra capacity in a sector under pressure but also focuses on a non-medical model that may be better for some young people, explains Smith.
