Talking therapies find their voice

An NHS programme aims to open up access to talking therapies for children and young people with mental health needs across England. Joe Lepper investigates what support is being offered.

Around half of people in England with a lifetime mental health problem experience their first symptoms by the age of 14. This is one of the more telling statistics contained in the government strategy to address the issue, No Health Without Mental Health, published in 2011.

Neglect of mental health problems can have far-reaching consequences for the individuals affected and society as a whole. According to research by the Centre for Mental Health, the economic costs associated with poor mental health in the form of absence from work, homelessness support and entry into the criminal justice system amount to a staggering £105bn a year.
