BACKGROUND
Scran Academy, named after a slang term for food, was set up in 2017 by social entrepreneur and trainer John Loughton, to support young people in a part of north Edinburgh known for its poverty and high social exclusion. “This is part of Edinburgh that is sadly still infamous for the Trainspotting culture, not the touristic streets of the Royal Mile,” says Loughton, who grew up there and, as a teenager, helped found the area’s first youth forum. In 2007, he was elected the youngest chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament and in 2011 set up leadership training social enterprise Dare2Lead.
