How early years can learn from the Little Stars child abuse case

In the wake of the Little Stars Nursery child abuse case, early years professionals give their recommendations and views on what action settings should take to prevent such horrific incidents in the future.

Birmingham City Council and Ofsted admitted last week that they had failed to protect the child at the centre of the Little Stars Nursery child rape case. The serious case review (SCR) highlighted weaknesses in the inspection process and delays in the local authority's response to allegations made against the perpetrator Paul Wilson.

The review found Ofsted missed several opportunities to intervene. An inspection of the nursery in 2009 failed to spot lax recruitment processes at the early years setting. Significantly, these included the fact that Wilson was working without a criminal records check, and was hired before becoming a qualified nursery worker.
