Finding directors of the future

With an expected surge in DCSs changing post, the upon programme is helping prepare aspiring leaders.

In recent weeks, two of the most experienced directors of children’s services (DCS) have announced their retirements. Gail Tolley is stepping down after eight years as DCS in the London borough of Brent while Helen Riley, director in Staffordshire since 2014, is also leaving. They follow the retirement of Jenny Coles last August after 11 years as DCS in Hertfordshire.

An increase in directors leaving or changing roles is to be expected following the turmoil of the pandemic, explains Jane Parfrement, chief executive of the Staff College (see box).

While it is hard to replace such experienced leaders as Tolley, Riley and Coles, an increase in churn in children’s services leadership will present opportunities for assistant directors to step up to the DCS role.
