
Retail experience
Working with young people was something I knew I wanted to do even as a young person. I was convinced I wanted to be a teacher because I didn’t realise there were so many avenues in which I could work with young people. Still, after finishing my degree in textiles, I couldn’t face studying for an extra year so I ended up working in a shop as a customer sales assistant.
I loved working in retail – it gave me a stepping stone to gain some leadership skills through managing departments, as well as teamwork and communication skills. But deep down I knew it wasn’t fulfilling my passion to help young people. I took a leap and applied for a part time post at Wigan Youth Zone (pictured) in 2016 and it’s been the best career decision I could have made.
