PROJECT
Heritage Schools Programme
PURPOSE
To support schools in areas of low social mobility to teach local history and give children a sense of pride about where they live
FUNDING
The Department for Education has funded the programme since 2012. Since 2015 it has provided £817,000 each year
BACKGROUND
Historic England is a government-funded public body responsible for historic places. It launched the Heritage Schools programme in 2012 following an independent review of cultural education in England, commissioned by the then Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Historic England's head of communities, learning, inclusion and volunteering Sandra Stancliffe devised the programme to address concerns that school education was failing to help children gain a sense of place within their local communities.
