I regularly attended my youth centre as a young person and, like many others, I ended up as a volunteer. It mainly helped by running sports activities.
- So straight in as a career?
Not at all. I was a retail manager for a number of years but I always kept up the volunteering. I just found it was a different outlet for me and I got so much out of my club that I was keen to give something back.
Over the years, my commitment continued to grow and I started getting paid part-time roles, eventually going full time. I think my retail job had helped give me good communication skills and, as an employer of young people, I learned more about what was important to them.
