Anti-social behaviour: Name and shame is a proof of virility

Some young people see it as a "proof of their virility" to be named and shamed for anti-social behaviour, the chief executive of the National Youth Agency has warned.

Tom Wylie, speaking at the launch last week of Positive Images, a campaign to improve the media's portrayal of young people started by Young People Now, Children Now's sister publication, said the "narrative" of anti-social behaviour and responses to it were contributing to a sense of exclusion and risked "demonising a generation".

He said naming and shaming could add to the status of some young men in their community.

Children's minister Margaret Hodge, also speaking at the launch, claimed young people were "fed up" with they way they were portrayed in much of the media. She pledged that England's children's commissioner would make the issue a priority after he or she was appointed.
