A minority due to their age and gender, girls and young women in the criminal justice system are ignored, misunderstood and misrepresented.

To find out more about their experiences – from contact with the police and the courts, to probation and prison – we set up the Young Women's Justice Project.

It aims to build the evidence-base through research, empower young women to use their voices to make change, and influence policy and decision makers to take better account of girls' and young women's age- and gender-specific needs.

Impact of trauma
