Former chief inspector of schools Mike Tomlinson published his interim review of qualifications for 14- to 19-year-olds this week. It recommends changes to the current system to make it more inclusive. A consultation period now follows before a final report is presented to ministers in the summer.

Young people who participated in the Hansard Society's HeadsUp debate on asylum showed "considerable confusion" about the subject, say the organisers. Some were unwilling to empathise with asylum seekers while others were keen to welcome those in need. Staff recruitment checks are the least-met standard in most children's residential settings, according to findings from the outgoing National Care Standards Commission. But research found that staff-child relationships, along with leisure activities and free time, were most likely to measure up to inspectors' standards.
