The phrase "turn of the screw" refers to an action that makes a bad situation worse, especially one that forces someone to do something. And one reason, perhaps, that prison officers are routinely known as "screws" is because of the mediaeval torture using thumbscrews - tightening them up to increase the pain. In just a generation, young people really have witnessed and experienced the turn of the screw.

The voluntary sector's attitude to rights is ambivalent. When we appeal to the public, make our case to funders or seek to influence policy makers, we tend to emphasise children's needs and the services that we offer rather than talking about children's rights. In private, despite our own stated beliefs, we conclude that rights language is toxic - a turn-off to our supporters and politically unpopular.

Although all the political parties featured children's issues in their manifestos, with all of the debate about national priorities in the run-up to the general election, I am sure I was not alone in being disappointed that children did not feature more prominently in the promises made by any of them.
