NYA Update: Views from the sector sought to inform commission into sufficiency

Friday, March 2, 2012

The National Youth Agency's Commission into Sufficiency is seeking evidence from across the youth sector to inform the development of a robust sufficiency model.

The Commission into Sufficiency has been set up by the agency to determine what can be viewed as a "sufficient offer" of local provision for services for young people.

The commission is made up of key figures from the statutory, voluntary and academic sectors and young people’s views are represented by a young person with experience in this area.

The need for a commission was identified by the NYA following the launch of Positive for Youth, which confirmed that the statutory duty to secure access to a local offer is to remain, but did not provide clarification on what a good or sufficient offer should look like.

The commission is holding two days of evidence gathering in March and wants to hear from as wide an audience as possible.

It is asking for interested parties to complete an initial short written questionnaire. From these it will invite individuals to events to participate in the discussion. The commission’s findings will:

  • inform the government’s consultation on the streamlined guidance for local authorities;
  • support local understanding of what "sufficiency" looks like.
