Youth-friendly space for Leeds
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
Young people in Leeds have created a room at a health centre to help them feel more comfortable when talking to adults about their concerns.
The room, at Woodhouse Health Centre, features specially designed artwork by school students, information notice boards, colourful furnishings and a guarantee of confidentiality for all users.
The Leeds Primary Care Trust (PCT) initiative is an extension of its young people- friendly GP practice scheme. This enables young people to speak to professionals about concerns such as acne, bullying, relationships and sexual health or exam stress.
Each surgery that runs the initiative has a dedicated worker to ensure young people have the option to speak to someone in confidence, who isn't their usual family doctor or nurse.
Natalie Valentine, 18, said: "I think young people need this kind of facility and my friends are more likely to use it."
