What's the area like?

A recent local authority survey showed people who live and work in Cumbria feel they have a better quality of life than others in the UK. Much of this north west county is in the scenic Lake District National Park, but some areas are in the 10 per cent most deprived in the country. Urban centres include Carlisle, Workington, Whitehaven, Kendal and Barrow-in-Furness.

- And the working culture?

Hard-working and dedicated to improving outcomes for young people. A recent staff survey found that more than 90 per cent ofemployees feel high standards are expected of them, that innovation is encouraged, and that Connexions Cumbria is a good and supportive employer. There is a strong motivational team culture, with a buddying scheme for new recruits.

- What are the main challenges?

In recent years Connexions Cumbria has been successful in reducing levels of young people not in education, employment or training to among the lowest in the country. However, a persistent issue is the rural nature of Cumbria. Much of the county consists of remote and scattered communities, posing challenges for transport and access to learning and employment.

- So what roles might be available?

Personal advisers, Connexions assistants and support staff, plus a variety of project workers. There is a practice of "growing your own staff" with five per cent of the budget devoted to training and development. Staff can also access a £50 training and development voucher.

- Are the benefits good?

They are comparable with equivalent services in the region. There is a final salary pension scheme, up to 33 days holiday, Childcare Vouchers and flexible working arrangements.

- And what do other people say?

The partnership won a Children and Young People's Services Award for workforce development last year. The young judges said: "Connexions needs to let people know how good they are."
