Work Wise: Numbers Game - Education spending

Government spending on school pupils in England has shot up by 65 per cent over the past decade.

In 1997/98, the average spent on education per pupil per year was £2,790, according to the Department for Children, Schools and Families. That figure has risen to £4,610 per pupil in 2007/08, an increase of 65 per cent in 10 years. These figures are based on an analysis of funding for all full-time students aged from three- to 19-years-old.

James Turner, director of policy at the Sutton Trust, said: "More funding for state schools is welcome and it is right that this will be targeted at those pupils most in need. But, of course, money on its own is not the answer - any investment needs to be combined with further reform of our socially selective education system."
