What did they do? The school opened a special memorial garden in memory of eight-year-old pupil Olivia Hodgson, who died suddenly from leukaemia. The design incorporated lots of colourful flowers and written messages from Olivia's classmates.
How were pupils involved? Olivia's school friends designed the garden. They wanted to create a memorial to reflect her bright, friendly and caring personality. The garden includes a waterfall feature, a walk-through arch, benches, a heart-shaped floor design and a stage because Olivia loved to sing and dance. Teachers, school friends and governors joined Olivia's family for a special ceremony to officially open the memorial garden. Pupils sang hymns and a local minister said a prayer.
Who paid for the garden? Kirkby Small Business Forum launched a fund for the garden after Olivia died. Several other local businesses and organisations also made donations and local labourers helped build the garden for free.
How did it help pupils and staff? Head teacher Gillian Holland says: "The memorial garden is a celebration of the life of a lively and popular little girl. Designing it has been a way for children and teachers to channel their grief and create a lasting memory of Olivia."
