Welsh Assembly Government, 5x60 project.

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

What is it? The 5x60 project is a healthy living initiative. Welsh pupils are taught how to write, star in and produce short films to promote sports and activities. It is part of the Welsh Assembly's work to achieve their target of 90 per cent of secondary pupils doing 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week by 2020.

Who runs it? The Welsh Assembly Government commissioned the Sports Council for Wales and Media4Schools to run the 5x60 programme.

How does it work? Teachers and pupils are trained in media production by Media4Schools, which then supports them as they produce a range of short films. So far, films have featured kayaking, water polo, skiing, mountain biking, basketball and street dance.

What next? After the pupils' films are completed, they are put up on the 5x60 project website. The project is also planning to send 5x60 officers out to work in secondary schools, to create a range of activities for young people who have lost interest in sports.

Where can I find out more? You can watch the films at www.5x60.org.uk. For more information, contact Sarah Mogford at the Sports Council for Wales on 029 2033 8273 or sarah.mogford@scw.org.uk.
