The Telford and Wrekin Youth Games

What is it? The Telford and Wrekin Youth Games is a competitive sports day for local primary school children. But unlike most sports days, children take part in multi-skills activities, which test their balance and co-ordination, as opposed to traditional sports.
Why was it set up? The games were set up to encourage children who are less enthusiastic about conventional sports to get active. The activities are designed to develop pupils' agility, balance and co-ordination.
What happens on the day? Teams from local schools compete in eight different activities. Pupils can also try different sports in taster sessions.
Who can take part? The games are open to local primary school children who have not taken part in any other school competitions this academic year. This entry requirement exists because the scheme is designed to increase participation.
When are the games? Children in 34 primary schools have already started competing in a series of heats, which will determine which teams win a place in the games. The final Youth Games will take place at the Telford College of Arts and Technology on 30 June 2009.
