The Royal Horticultural Society

What are they doing? The Royal Horticultural Society is launching a nationwide initiative to encourage teachers, pupils and local people to get involved in cultivating school gardens.

The Get Your Grown-ups Growing scheme will launch in October, with primary schools hosting gardening events at which parents, grandparents and local people will join pupils and teachers to have fun gardening.

How do you get involved? Registration is now open. To register or find out more, visit www.rhs.org.uk/gygg. Teachers signing up will receive a free Royal Horticultural Society pack, including how-to guides and activity ideas, as well as seeds, posters and stickers. Every school that takes part will have the opportunity to win prizes, including a patio greenhouse.

What do professionals think? Graham Johnson, school facilities manager at Neasden Primary School in Hull, took part in a Get Your Grown-ups Growing pilot scheme last year. "When we first got involved, all we had was a bare patch of ground," he says. "We are now growing wheat and barley and the children are excited about tasting bread made using ingredients from their own school. It's a useful tool for introducing children to healthy eating and teaching them about where food comes from."
