The North Huyton Learning Collaborative, Knowsley, Merseyside

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

What is it? The North Huyton Learning Collaborative is a partnership of schools, community groups and children's services agencies. It is funded by North Huyton New Deal for Communities and exists to improve educational attainment for local children and young people. Part of the partnership's work involves promoting its Creative Curriculum approach to schools in the partnership.

How does Creative Curriculum work? Instead of teaching individual subjects, schools that use the Creative Curriculum approach use themes to teach across the curriculum. So instead of teaching maths or English, teachers use topics such as the seaside or food to engage pupils in a range of subjects.

Why is it relevant? Sir Jim Rose, who is conducting an independent review into the primary curriculum, is expected to recommend that more schools use methods like the Creative Curriculum approach when he reports to the government in spring this year.

Where can I find out more? The North Huyton Learning Collaborative has put together a resource pack to help other schools benefit from creative teaching. Go to www.northhuytonlc. co.uk for more information.
