THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Youth Action and democracy
Wednesday, November 26, 2003
Articles demonstrate the good practice and real commitment on show to involving young people in the decisions affecting them and their communities.
Calderdale Youth Parliament has been credited with helping the council attain Beacon Status for its achievements in transforming education and supporting young people. In West Sussex, the youth cabinet and youth parliament provide direct access to adult decision-makers with a commitment to ensuring that more marginalised young people have a voice. Other articles look at how a programme of events in Middlesbrough resulted in greater understanding and engagement in the working of the town and how action research is involving young people in decision-making in Birmingham.
The November issue of Youth Policy Update contains the regular briefings on public policy, youth and social policy, Connexions, funding and Ofsted, but focuses particularly on the Government's green paper Every Child Matters.
As well as a summary of the main aims, the issue contains a copy of The Agency's initial response to the green paper consultation. The Agency is working up its full response and urging youth services and young people to contribute and respond themselves. The consultation period runs until 1 December 2003.
