Tackling disproportionality: Three examples of YOT good practice

HM Inspector of Probation (HMIP) highlights three effective approaches being delivered in Camden, Sandwell and Oldham.

CAMDEN
STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Camden’s May 2020 HMIP inspection report, which rated the service “outstanding”, lists a number of initiatives aimed at cutting disproportionality.

Powering its efforts is a three-year strategic plan, which outlines the shared priorities of the YOS, its partners – police, children’s social care and health – and the community.

The backdrop is particularly challenging: Camden’s own data at the time of the report showed that the gravity of serious youth violence and reoffending rates were rising. BAME young people were receiving more severe or intensive sentences, including custodial sentences, and were more likely to be remanded, than their white counterparts.

The report highlights the service’s paid peer advocate scheme, which employs three BAME advocates who “bridge the relationships between children’s services and how best to engage and work with young people”.
