Runaways given help from The Children's Society

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

The Children's Society launched two projects to support young runaways this week to coincide with the publication of the government's Young Runaways Action Plan.

The projects in Coventry and Keighley, West Yorkshire, are backed with £250,000 from Comic Relief, and will seek to prevent young people from running away.

The Safe in the City Coventry project will provide support to young people with a history of running away.

It will help with problems such as self-esteem, school and family by bringing together services run by various local agencies.

The Keighley project will try to prevent running away by offering a tailored programme of support, which could include family mediation work or help with drug problems. It will also run a drop-in service for young people, and work in schools to help children at risk of exploitation.

The projects came as the government set out plans to help young runaways or those at risk of running away, including a push to get local councils to develop emergency accommodation services.
