What is it? An equestrian academy set up at Monmouth Comprehensive School in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly Government. The academy is managed by the Sports Council for Wales and run locally by Monmouthshire County Council.
What's the idea? To encourage secondary school children to exercise more by providing them with an opportunity not normally available.
How does it work? Pupils are offered an opportunity to take part in bi-weekly horse-riding lessons. The weeks in between are spent learning about the essentials of horse management through guest speakers and activities. The lessons form part of the school's drive to provide high-quality after-school hours learning. World-class riders Matt and Marie Ryan help to coach the students.
What about pupils who have never ridden before? There are a variety of horses and ponies to suit all abilities. Trainers provide realistic stepping stones to help students achieve their goals.
Any other benefits? The academy offers pupils the chance to obtain nationally recognised qualifications in riding and stable management to allow pupils to pursue equestrian-related careers when they leave school.
