Quick guide to... Blepharitis

Monday, June 28, 2010

Blepharitis is one of the most common eye conditions. Symptoms include soreness or stinging in the eyes, itchy eyelids and crusty eyelashes.

The most common cause of blepharitis is bacterial infection. It can be complicated by skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, which is responsible for dandruff, or rosacea - red blotches on the face.

  • There are two main types of blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis causes inflammation of the outside edge of eyelids where the eyelashes are attached. Posterior blepharitis causes inflammation of the Meibomian glands which produce fatty liquid to protect the eyes. These glands are on the inside front edge of eyelids. It is not uncommon for people to experience both types of the condition.
  • In most cases blepharitis is not serious, causing only mild discomfort, but in rare cases it can lead to sight loss. Symptoms can include eyelids sticking together, a burning sensation in the eyes, increased sensitivity to light and eyelashes falling out. Swollen eyelids can also indicate blepharitis.
  • There is no cure for blepharitis except for ensuring that eyes are cleaned daily. It is a long-term condition that can last indefinitely but regular cleaning will ensure symptoms are minimised. In severe cases GPs will prescribe antibiotics. A typical eye hygiene routine includes applying a cotton wool compress soaked in warm water to closed eyelids several times a day. When symptoms have reduced this routine can be decreased to once a day.
