Tuesday, September 30, 2008
The office of the children's commissioner for England, 11 Million, wants to appoint regional commissioners to increase its profile among young people and get more local feedback.
The organisation's new chief executive Sue Berelowitz told CYP Now: "Iplan to form some strong alliances and have already had discussions withsome directors of children's services about a possible regionalcommissioner."
The office is still formulating the plan and has not yet released anyfurther details about the number of posts that could be created, orwhether these would be full- or part-time.
But Maggie Atkinson, president of the Association of Directors ofChildren's Services, said she would welcome such a move.
"The differences between urban and rural regions are very marked, sohaving regional children's champions would be a welcome development,"she said. "We hope they would be people who have worked in the systempost-Every Child Matters in order to strengthen the work of thechildren's commissioner."
