Nurses to examine health in London

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

School nurses across London are setting up a group to look at health matters across the capital.

The London School Nurses Special Interest Group is being established after members of the Unite union said they wanted a forum to discuss public health problems specific to London.

Ros Godson, professional officer for school-aged children's health at Unite, said the group hoped to work with the London Mayor on his health strategy for schools. It will also see how primary care trusts (PCTs) can work together.

"At the moment each PCT does its own thing. Children move across borough boundaries so we need to try and get a pan-London public health focus," she said.

Godson said the group would also attempt to examine the health issues behind problems, such as how poor nutrition can lead to obesity. The effect of the 2012 Olympics and knife crime in the capital will also come under its remit.

The group will meet once a month with the first meeting planned for the end of June.
