Mothers back family drug court
Wednesday, June 1, 2011
Mothers who have been through the Family Drug and Alcohol Court (FDAC) are less likely to have their children taken into care, according to an independent study.
Research by the Nuffield Foundation and Brunel University found that 39 per cent of mothers who had gone through the court were reunited with their children, compared with 21 per cent of mothers from a comparison group in ordinary care proceedings. Thirty-nine out of the 41 parents evaluated said they favoured the FDAC approach.
The FDAC pilot is being run in the Inner London Family Proceedings Court at Wells Street in partnership with The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and children's charity Coram.
