The new chief inspector of prisons has said the Youth Justice Board (YJB) plays a "crucial role" in youth justice.
Speaking to CYP Now Nick Hardwick said he hopes the YJB is allowed tocontinue its work which ensures children and young people have adedicated body within the wider prison system.
"I think the YJB has a crucial role to play and I hope they will havethe opportunity to do that," he said. "The YJB can have a focus andexpertise in dealing with children and young people, and bring adifferent culture to the table which wouldn't exist if (the youth secureestate) was just part of the normal prison system."
Last week, Max Chambers from the independent think tank Policy Exchangecalled for the YJB to be scrapped saying closing it would save taxpayers100m over four years.
