Funding Watch: The Holywood Trust

What is it? The Holywood Trust is a charity that helps young people in Dumfries and Galloway by creating opportunities through grants to individual children and young people and organisations working with them. Grants are geared towards helping children improve the cultural, educational and social aspects of their lives. The trust focuses primarily on young people aged 15 to 25 years, but occasionally considers supporting vulnerable younger children in relation to health or social disadvantage.

How much is available? There is no minimum or maximum amount of grant available – anything from a few hundred pounds to several thousand. The level of support is decided by factors including the extent to which the funding will address annual priorities determined by the charity’s trustees or fill a gap in local provision. The amount of funding available from other sources, and the number and background of the young people who will benefit from the organisation’s work, are also factors.

What will it fund? Examples of the support provided for individual young people includes household items for care leavers, a contribution towards college or university expenses, and help for young people to participate in sporting and cultural activities at regional, national or international level through help paying for musical instruments, or sporting equipment.

Support for organisations working with young people can include paying for equipment, group development activities and residential trips.

When is the deadline? For grant requests of £2,500 or less, applications are accepted at any time. The next deadline for applications of more than £2,500 from organisations is 1 July.
