The Beatrice Laing Trust was established in 1952 by Sir John Laing, former owner of the construction firm Laing, who died in 1978. The trust focuses on the relief of poverty and promoting the evangelical Christian faith, both at home and abroad. Financial support is given to a wide range of charities seeking to relieve poverty, both in the UK and overseas.

How much is available? Grants range between £1,000 and £5,000, although the trust has the capacity to make a few larger grants each year. Applicants are advised to set out the total project cost, although trustees rarely fund a project in full. Grants may be for specific items within the budget or a contribution towards the overall cost.

What will it pay for? A significant percentage of the grants awarded are made on a one-off basis for capital purposes such as the purchase or construction of new premises, building an extension, redevelopment or refurbishment, or the purchase of equipment and vehicles. Most other grants are directed towards specific projects. In the past, grants have been handed to charities providing practical services to people with physical, mental and learning difficulties and their families/carers, including special schools seeking to develop and expand facilities; charities supporting young people with complex needs in the transition into adulthood, providing supported accommodation and opportunities for training or employment; facilities for respite care; and organisations providing opportunities for training and development to young people who are disadvantaged or "at risk".

What is the deadline? There are no formal deadlines. Applications can be submitted at any time. They are dealt with in order of receipt and the trust aims to inform applicants of the outcome within four months.
