What makes Ferndale an Eco-School? Pupils at eco-conscious Ferndale Primary were awarded the Eco-Schools green flag at the end of last year, which is a national award given to schools that are working towards becoming sustainable. The school also won the Tipton Litterwatch Environmental Schools Champion Award in summer 2008.
How did it win these awards? Ferndale Primary School works hard to promote recycling and all of its pupils are encouraged to help keep the school tidy. A hit squad of pupils take part in a lunch-time litter patrol every day and the school also runs a rangers scheme, in which pupils are encouraged to take an interest in the environment.
What else does it do? The school has an eco-school code for staff and pupils. It also hosts green days, which are environmentally themed. Pupils have the chance to become recycling monitors and energy auditors.
So is the school classed as being sustainable? The school is working towards getting Sustainable Schools Status. To be classed as sustainable, it must demonstrate eco credentials across eight areas, including purchasing and waste, and buildings and grounds.
