Family mediators help the homeless

Health Social Care Youth Work
Barnet Council is introducing family mediators to tackle youth homelessness, it was revealed at a conference last week.

The London borough will also launch a pack to help teachers discourage children from running away and is looking at a possible "crash pad" scheme to house homeless young people on a temporary basis, while mediators work with families.

Conservative councillor Lynne Hillan, lead member for community services, said: "Our aim is to help young people understand the realities of leaving home, provide safe interim accommodation and help families to repair relationships."

The communities department named Barnet as a centre of excellence for youth homelessness last year.
