Extra cash for free extended services
Tuesday, July 8, 2008
The government is to spend 265m more on extended school services for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The cash, announced this week by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, will be used to fund free extended services for children whose families are unable to pay for extra-curricular activities.
This year 18 local authorities will pilot the so-called extended schools subsidy, including Gateshead, Portsmouth and Wolverhampton. The authorities will consult young people to find out the activities they want.
Councils may combine cash from the extended schools subsidy with that of the youth opportunity and youth capital funds, as all three are ringfenced for positive activities for young people.
