Draft guidance on YJB policy changes
Tuesday, September 9, 2008
The Youth Justice Board has released a draft version of guidance designed to help youth offending teams prepare for the biggest changes to the juvenile justice system in a decade.
The guidance, Youth Justice: The Scaled Approach, incorporates changes to the system resulting from the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 and, in particular, the youth rehabilitation order, which will come into effect from October 2009.
The Scaled Approach means young people who offend will receive interventions tailored to meet their specific needs, according to their assessed risk of reoffending or causing serious harm to others (CYP Now, 27 August-2 September).
The release of the post-consultation draft aims to give youth offending teams and other organisations likely to be affected time to prepare for the changes.
Brendan Finegan, director of strategy at the Youth Justice Board, said: "Its individualised approach is designed to help young people who have offended reduce their involvement in crime in the future and improve the outcomes for young people who are known to the youth justice system."
