Diabetes care to be 'specialism'
Monday, September 27, 2010
Children's diabetes care is to be recognised as a "clear specialism within the NHS" by introducing a payment system for services.
Care services minister Paul Burstow said the current structure "fails totake into account the complex nature of paediatric care".
The mandatory payment system is expected to be introduced in stages fromApril 2011 to provide "a clear funding stream" to support services.
Burstow added that introducing a "much stronger payment system" forchildren's diabetes services will help "bring them out of the shadow ofother NHS services".
