Council targets on obesity too weak
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Council targets to cut childhood obesity are not tough enough, according to a joint report by the health and public sector performance watchdogs.
The Healthcare Commission and the Audit Commission report Are We Choosing Health? criticised the latest public service agreement on children's health for calling on councils to reduce obesity levels to year 2000 levels by 2020. It said this target was too weak and that an earlier, far tougher, target - which called on councils to halt a year on year rise in obesity by 2010 - should be reinstated.
The report said such measures were needed because 2006 statistics show around a third of children in the UK are obese or overweight.
