Consultation of the Week: Preventing Unintentional Injuries Among Children and Young People Aged Under 15

Friday, May 28, 2010

Unintentional injury is high on the list of causes of death among young people aged from birth to 14.

The Department of Health commissioned the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) to produce provisional guidance on interventions aimed at preventing unintentional outdoor injuries among young people under the age of 15. The guidance covers designated outdoor play spaces such as skateboard parks and playgrounds, and other non-designated external areas including fields and farmyards.

Factors that influence the likelihood of injury include young people's attitudes towards risk. The guidance is therefore aimed at organisations responsible for providing information to children, young people and their families.

It is one of five pieces of guidance currently being developed by Nice on prevention of unintentional injuries. The others include road design and protective equipment to prevent road injury, and provision of safety equipment and risk assessments to prevent injuries at home.

Feedback from practitioners is welcomed, but they must be registered stakeholders. Nice recommends non-stakeholders either register or pass their comments to a registered stakeholder who can comment on their behalf.
