London Mayor Ken Livingstone has welcomed government moves to introduce the Childcare Affordability Programme outside of the capital.
The £33m programme has subsidised childcare costs for more than 7,400 families since its launch in 2005.
The government has now said the programme will be extended to other parts of England. Livingstone said: "I am pleased to see the programme created in London being recognised by the government as a success."
Manny Lewis, chief executive of the London Development Agency, which runs the programme, added: "This acknowledges our success in supporting lower-income parents back into work and helping to lift families out of poverty."
