Braunstone Skills Centre, Leicester

What is it? The 2.3m Braunstone Skills Centre is a vocational training facility for ages 14 to 19. It includes two fully equipped practical workshops, changing facilities, three classrooms and student areas. It has been designed to feel like a workplace.
Why was it set up? The Braunstone Community Association (BCA) consulted local people to find out where there were gaps in education and training provision. Respondents asked for improved access to vocational training.
What can pupils study at the centre? The first courses on offer will be in construction and motor vehicle engineering. Eventually the centre plans to offer a wide range of specialist training for up to 480 students every week.
Who runs it? It was developed by BCA in partnership with Leicester City Council. Partners include Fullhurst and Riverside colleges, Leicester College and the Learning and Skills Council.
How was it funded? More than £1m of the funding came from the New Deal for Communities grant scheme. Leicestershire Economic Partnership contributed £800,000 and the council provided land worth £250,000. Leicester College and Fullhurst Community College helped supply furniture and equipment.
