Ask the Experts: Preparing for the EYFS

The new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is approaching fast. How should I begin to prepare?

Make sure you have a copy of the document and the guidance. You can download them from the Department for Education website.

You could attend a conference or workshop designed to help you to implement the new EYFS. Check out whether your local authority or a membership organisation such as the National Day Nurseries Association is offering information and training.

Conduct an audit of your policies and identify areas that need amending. Develop an action plan to address the issues. And set a timeline and build in a plan for training staff. Also update staff and agree how you will explain the changes to parents.

Look at the suggested integrated assessment and talk to your local health visitor about how you can do this together. Finally, consider your supervision policy and process and ensure it will encourage more reflective and safe practitioners.
